The 8-volume CD box has a few extra tracks that were not present in the vinyl set. King mono Stand by Me - Ben E. King mono Green Onions - Booker T.
Location: Lexington, Massachusetts. The Stax box is bedrock stuff, all killer and no filler. Terrific mastering too, very smooth and punchy. As I recall, they used a tube deck to play back the masters, which was a new concept in digital mastering back then.

I'm less inclined to the completist approach and would rather have something curated that allows for B-sides. How's the sound? All Mono? Doesn't appear to be an LP-size box though RoyalScamJan 26, Sorry my first image link was broken within a day!

They sound just like the 45s I grew up with, and the mastering is excellent. Bill Inglot used tube gear and a full-track mono tape machine to do the work.
The box dates back to or so, but it's still the gold standard. GrantMay 24, Location: The Vicarage, Bongolia. I, like many others, missed out of the first run, which was beautifully packaged and pricey but worth it. Now, a second run has been produced -- and while the packaging isn't as big as the original run, the music is the same.
And, for me, this is all about the music. That's not to knock the second run packaging here -- it's spartan in nature, but still comprehensive and informative. But the music -- man, this is one of the several soundtracks I grew up to on 45s and radio yeah, I'm that old.
A good collection. A good buy. I've been wanting to get this for a long time but, a trip to the Stax Museum last year, reading Robert Gordon's excellent book about the history of Stax Respect Yourselfcompleting my Otis Redding library, and listening to several songs from this box set on youtube made my realize I HAVE to get it NOW! Is every song great? Of course not. Are there some throwaways? If you like the early Memphis soul sound, you'll love this. The book that comes with it is also very I Dont Want You Anymore - Various - The Complete Stax-Volt Singles 1959-1968 (CD).
My next purchase? A must have! What a fantastic gem! Though most could be satisfied -- and well served -- with the STAX 50th Anniversary Collection, this one is for the collector or completist music fan.
And it's a great trip. Sure not every single release was a classic, but this box remains superior to most by the shear number of songs and, it should be mentioned, the quality of the remastering as well. Others have stated what Stax meant to the world of music in better words than what I'm capable of, but I'll say this: if I Dont Want You Anymore - Various - The Complete Stax-Volt Singles 1959-1968 (CD) like music that has warmth, mood, feeling, and is alive, and not over produced and under sung as much of today's music scene is unfortunately, then this 9-CD set is for you.
And The MG's, you'll get to hear the one shots such as Gorgeous George, whose "Biggest Fool In Town" is one entertaining song from the first time he sings, to when the song is finishing up.
