My fears, it turned out, were completely unfounded. Not only is "Modern Vampires of the City" an excellent album, it's the best Vampire Weekend has ever released. At this point it's safe to worry not when they will stumble, but where the ceiling is.

It starts out unassumingly enough, with the relaxed "Obvious Bicycle". It's patient and unhurried, meandering but with purpose as it winds its way through four minutes like some kind of pre-album overture. Starting with "Unbelievers", Vampire Weekend returns to the joyous and boisterous sound they've been known for before now, with immaculately crafted pop songs that run the gamut from the chamber pop of "Step", with its gorgeous choir denouement to the fiery "Diane Young.

The album at large deals with the surprisingly heavy topics of aging, death, and religion, all wrapped up in sublime melody and impeccable arrangement. Whether they're ripping through the galloping "Worship You" or slowly moving through "Hannah Hunt", there is no doubt that this is a band that pays attention to every detail imaginable while leaving the end result look easy, as if anyone could do it.

That's not possible, of course, but that's how Vampire Weekend makes it look. Amazingly agile with both the English language and musical instrumentation, and possessing a healthy grasp of world history, Ezra Koenig, specifically, Rostam Batmanglij and the band have come up with an instance classic worthy of, and the equal to, such institutions as Sgt.

Pepper's, Revolver, Innervisions and any other of the variety of albums which are on course for very long lives and hyperbolic interjections of newly-found appreciation. What is more amazing than the band's ability to pull a classic together, is their capacity to realize the grievous error of their sophomore effort, a less ingratiating aping of a musical institution Paul Simon one is hard pressed to find. Not everyone will understand the remarkably mature and informed lyrics, the hidden messages, the jokes, and the rest here, but this is to be expected, as it was of the Beatles and other musicians of note of the last wild and woolly century.

If I have had any reservations about the band, they have been erased by this treasure, pulled from the fire before almost inevitable conflagration of the bandand duly Hudson - Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires Of The City (Vinyl to the public for the approval of at least a smattering of it. An indie classic nevertheless!

Modern Vampires of the City is for me Vampire Weekend's best album. Everything sounds a little bit more polished and the production quality is great. Songs like Hannah Hunt and Unbelievers are favorites and staples of their catalog so don't pass up this album when looking for additions to your collection. I bought the vinyl version and it sounds great and comes with a big poster of the album art that I hang on my wall. This one star is because I received Album) warped pressings in a row.

What a hassle. Not sure what the issue is, but it's a shame because the music is good and mastered well. One person found this helpful. A shock even to me. Okay let's start by saying yes they did go way left field with this album, way!

I was so excited about this album for months when it was suppose to come out in March some time and was I understand now why it was pushed back, and pushed back, and pushed back again. I was so ready to tear them apart, and that would really hurt because they are one of my favorite bands. I had to listen to this album again and again; I even had to listen to some old music by them before I could write this. I had to keep in mind the whole time advice a friend gave me, " Bands should be allowed to experiment, try different artistic styles, grow With that said I like the album.

I was going to say to look at this as a different band and separate it from Vampire Weekend, but I have since disregarded that completely. E: Vampire Weekend is the name. This is the more dark, spiritual, more serious tone while we are use to getting the light, fun, airy side of the band.

Those parts were then reintegrated with the sessions and further manipulated to create a synthesis of sound and tone, both old and new. Modern Vampires of the City has a sense of grandeur and romanticism evocative of the city where it was conceived. Obvious Bicycle 2. Unbelievers 3. Step 4. Diane Young 5. Don't Lie 6. This is the more dark, spiritual, more serious tone while we are use to getting the light, fun, airy side of the band. If we actually look inside of ourselves, we always knew this was coming and I think the band finally thought it was time and that we could handle it.

From the brilliant response I think that's the case, although some people don't get it that is understandable I was like a lot of them at first. I do feel this album is different but good and if you open your mind you can really get down with it. I feel this is more New York inspired, as it was named, and the album cover shows and gives us a little more of their New York City music roots then the more up-tempo wordiness of the band and the music.

Like they said in Unbelievers, "I'm not excited, But should I be, Is this the fate that half of the world has planned for me? I am sure the band felt a lot of pressure and they should be allowed to try new things and evolve.

We get stuck in our own selfish wants we forget that they are their own people and we don't own the music, the music owns us.

We are blessed to live in a time where our favorite band is alive and together and just so happens to be putting out music while we are alive to enjoy it. This is the music of our time and we are watching it evolve and grow itself. We should just be lucky about that part and stop trying to make the world what we want to be, how successful is that ever, really!?

So I for one am anxious to see what one of my favorite bands goes from here and this seems like a good start. I couldn't give it five stars because it's a lot left field, but good.

I love Contra even better and so glad that came before!!!! But it's good! See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. A third good album by one of the best, and most original, bands of recent times.

My five star rating is generous compared to Contra, but is relative to all the other albums out there right now that I have listened to. Report abuse. Any budding musician, songwriter or recording artist should listen to this album, which is a glowingly impressive example of how to craft an excellent collection of songs using a huge range of production techniques, orchestration and arrangements, without ever once making the end result sound cluttered. If you enjoy recording and making music you will love Vampires of the Modern City which is absolutely crammed with a vast array of colourful sounds and which is both a joy and great fun to behold.

Man of many fine recordings, producer Ariel Rechtshaid has done an absolutely superb job on creating this gem of an album. Ya Hey! Ugh, what a bad offering! I can see why they took a LONG hiatus after this I don't really subscibe to the view that VW have 'matured' with this album. In fact I don't really understand that point of view at all. This album is darker than the previous two released by the band. Gone are the feel good African rhythms and melodies which is a shame because those ingredients were the reasons for providing the 'colour' in the bands sound.

Combine that with the 'chirpy' and rather 'cheeky' vocal delivery and you have a good blend when adding the often complex 'electrical' keyboard arrangements.

Modern Vampires of the City doesn't really get going the same as the other two albums.

  2. The first Vampire Weekend album took time to really get to me, but eventually I was able to see the brilliance in the Paul Simon and Police-inspired indie world/yacht-rock they were peddling. With "Contra" I crossed from fan to HUGE fan, and I admit to some trepidation leading into "Modern Vampires"/5().
  3. Modern Vampires of the City is Vampire Weekend's third album, and it is a bustling world of voices and visions from the death of Henry Hudson to the Orthodox girl falling in love at an uptown falafel shop, from Hannah Hunt tearing up the New York Times on a distant beach to the lethal chandelier of "Everlasting Arms," from the ardent yearning of "Don't Lie" to the harmonized voice of hope in /5().

  8. Modern Vampires of the City is for me Vampire Weekend's best album. It moves forward from their previous albums, Contra and S/T without moving to far away from what made the band so popular in the first place.
