I recommend this album for persons who might have been put off by some of Coltrane's later recordings, but want something more indicative of his future work than his pre-"Giant Steps" records.
This is an absolutely excellent album featuring a great mix of Coltrane playing relatively straight jazz for him as well as his famous "sheets of sound" -the cascading flurry of notes and harmonies aimed fast, furious, and true. Propulsive drumming by Elvin Jones, evident throughout the album, and vigorous bass by Jimmy Garrison provide a strong foundation for Coltrane's glorious excursions.
His alto sax has an extraordinary pinched sound-somewhat like an oboe-that fits the subtle African and Indian influences.
Listen carefully and you'll hear McCoy Tyner quoting from "Kind of Blue" in the midst of a swinging, masterful solo. The cut is simply exhilarating, all cylinders firing, with splashes and bombs from Jones and driving grooves from the rhythm section. Immensely enjoyable! Eckstine's "I Want to Talk About You" begins with a lushly romantic statement of the melody although Coltrane's tenor sax makes it his ownand then he segments it, lengthens it, and reconstructs it.
His Alabama - Coltrane* - Live At Birdland (Vinyl gets to the core of the song; he speaks volumes of emotion. This is slightly more challenging than Afro Blue, but I still think that most jazz fans will understand and appreciate the unaccompanied solo mid-song. The next cut, "The Promise," is good, but somewhat redundant with the other tracks. The brooding, threatening opening and development of "Alabama" immediately resonated with me. The ensemble plays with empathy and consistency of purpose, and the thoughtful interplay of Coltrane and Garrison is memorable.
According to Leroi Jones' informative albeit hyper-serious and somewhat condescending liner notes, "'Your Lady' is the sweetest song on the album. Jones is just incredible on this cut and on "Afro Blue.
This is fairly conventional jazz, but the playing is excellent, especially Tyner's slightly Bill Evan-ish solo. Please note that cuts one through three only were recorded live at Birdland; the second half was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's Studio. Excellent sound, thanks to Van Gelder and the but digital remastering.
I just love this CD especially when I'm driving on the freeway! All of tracks are powerful. The CD fully demonstrates why Coltrane's quartet was the best jazz unit ever! Coltrane delivers strong solos backed with Elvin Jones' solid percussion. This CD contains 44 minutes of the best jazz that you'll ever hear on the planet.
It doesn't get any better than this! One person found this helpful. One warning: If you bought the eight CD set of the classic quartet, and are looking for something live to complement the studio tracks, maybe this isn't it. Only 3 of the selections are live. The other three are studio cuts, and are already included in the box set. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. The music here is excellent, the front cover is a good facsimile of the original with the original Impulse logo removed and the quality of the vinyl is very good.
You may be scratching your head thinking I am one of those odd people who give star ratings at odds with what they actually write about the product. The reason for the loss of starts it the bizarre inclusion of the bonus track. This recording should not be missed.
Not only was Coltrane in amazing form on this set but McCoy Tyner absolutely sounds like he has 6 hands, particularly on the opening cut Afro Blue. His piano solos are simply astounding. Then Elvin Jones on Your Lady matches his performance by providing an almost unbelievable drum accompaniment to Coltrane's solos. The classic quartet is always a pleasure but on this set of live and studio cuts they truly create music that is almost beyond the bounds of human expression.
Absolutely in the top 5 jazz cds I Album). As with each and every performance by John Coltrane, this live date was outstanding. It stands as a classic of the Jazz catalogue. One person found this helpful. A stunning performance. This is a compilation of John Coltrane's work - not original 'live' disk - check out the tracks; tracks are different; very misleading issue. It might have been okay had it slotted in at the end of side two but, because side 1 was two tracks totalling and side two was three tracks totalling to fit in villa they needed to reorder the tunes to avoid trying to cram too much onto one side.
What they did was take Afro-Blue off the beginning of side 1, shift The Promise and Alabama back from side 2 to side 1 then on side 2 star with 1. Afro-Blue 2. Your Lady 3. The result is a right old mess as with an Album, the running order is crucial. It would have been much, much better to have not bothered with that extra track and retained the integrity of the original album. It is not as if this was an extra number from the Birdland recording it is one from the studio session.
The original album has side 1 and the the first track of side 2 from the Live Birdland session, with two numbers from the Album) session. Why would I want a vinyl copy of any album that does not replicate the listening experience of the original album? I don't understand the negativity in some of these reviews. Listening in a quiet room to the first 3 'live' tracks of this album on CD is like witnessing history. Report abuse. Brilliant John Coltrane. There's a problem loading this menu right now.
